Since 1999, The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Coalition for kids, Inc. (CFK) has actively supported programs that reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among families on the Flathead Reservation and in Lake County Montana. CFK is a nonprofit organization with the primary goals of: Activating the community to address alcohol, tobacco and drugs use; providing coordination and program analysis; amplifying the success of current programs, and; establishing new programs to address the needs of the community. On May 1, 2000, The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Coalition for Kids, Inc were awarded a three-year Community Incentive Program (CIP) Contracts from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.
The Contract Brought funding for new programs and expansion of already existing programs in Lake County and The Flathead Reservation. These Include "Best Practice and Promising Practice" models that offer youth opportunities for growth, new skills, and community recognition. From these model programs, measured outcomes demonstrate increased bonding, healthy beliefs and clear standards among the youth, their families and the community. CFK continues to assess the needs of the community through forums, collected data and the Community Resource Document developed by the Evaluation Committee. The information gathered reveals gaps and overlaps in services, as well as un-served needs of the community. After research and evaluation, The Funding Committee utilizes the data to target funding sources through private and federal grantors. With sufficient funding, CFK is able to implement and sustain programs that ensure healthy opportunities for the children and families of The Flathead Nation and Lake County. The Flathead Reservation and Lake County Coalition for Kids, Inc. meet six times a year. The meetings are interesting and direct, and they provide a clear understanding of the current needs and services of the community. CFK's membership list is composed of Tribal and non-tribal community groups. A common bond and alliance is enhanced by encouraging open communication between the diverse organizations actively involved in the Coalition for Kids. Ultimately, this collaboration helps bridge gaps in services and ensures a safe and healthy community.
